Instructions
Prepare the Custard Mixture:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream (if using), sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until fully combined.
Pour the mixture into a shallow dish for easy dipping.
Slice and Dip the Sourdough Bread:
Cut sourdough bread into thick slices (¾ to 1 inch) if not pre-sliced.
Dip each slice into the custard mixture, allowing it to soak for 10–15 seconds per side. Avoid over-soaking to prevent sogginess.
Cook the French Toast:
Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add butter or oil.
Place soaked bread slices onto the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes on each side until golden brown and slightly crispy.
Adjust the heat to avoid burning while ensuring the custard cooks through.
Keep Warm (Optional):
If making a large batch, transfer cooked slices to a baking sheet and keep warm in a 200°F (95°C) oven while cooking the rest.
Serve with Toppings:
Arrange French toast slices on a plate and drizzle with maple syrup.
Add fresh fruit, a dusting of powdered sugar, and a dollop of whipped cream for the perfect breakfast presentation.
